The bison at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge are fenced in and do not wander the trail system.
The trails wrap around the east and northeast pastures, which are connected by a new viewing deck. The deck allows visitors to view the bison when they are in either of the pastures.
The herd got its start at the nature center in 1973, when the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge donated three bison.
The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge added more bison over the years through births, additional donations and purchases.
The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is now home to a herd of 18 bison that rotates among five pastures of about 210 acres.
