Are alligators commonly found at Sarasota’s Ted Sperling Park?

Alligators aren’t typically spotted at Ted Sperling Park because they are freshwater animals.

The water at Ted Sperling Park interacts with the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota Bay, Big Pass and Brushy Bayou –– most of which are bodies of saltwater. Alligators prefer bodies of freshwater like swamps, rivers and lakes.

It’s not impossible to see a gator at the park, but sightings are extremely rare.

Ted Sperling Park is known for its accessible boating, paddling and fishing opportunities. Visitors can expect to spot manatees, dolphins, fish, birds and other animals big and small.

Gator sightings have been keeping Floridians on edge as of late following an uptick of dangerous, and sometimes fatal, attacks this summer on swimmers. Even with that in mind, alligator attacks are still very rare and you likely won’t find any at Ted Sperling Park.
