Is Sarasota considering tearing down historic bungalows on Fruitville?

Clinton Engelberger | Suncoast Searchlight, Suncoast Searchlight

yes

A development company is proposing new buildings and amenities that would require demolishing the string of bungalows of the Historic Downtown Village on Fruitville Road.

Plans call for a 324-unit apartment building, parking garage, pool, gym and more to take over the 3.5-acre area.

However, nothing has been confirmed as of late April. Sarasota’s Development Review Committee has heard proposals from the developer but hasn’t signed off on any plans yet, and it still needs approval from city officials. There’s no timeline on when a decision could be made.

The bungalows encompass an array of small businesses and studios, including the Breakfast House, Eden Effect Artistry Hair and Art Studio, Blue Bird Salon and Boutique and Farm Vegan Kitchen.
