Did an earthquake occur in Sarasota?

Sarasota residents, along with numerous other Florida cities, felt the effect of an earthquake that impacted Cuba on June 8.

While it didn’t hit Sarasota, the area felt tremors from the 6.1-magnitude earthquake.

Sarasota residents and those as far north as Tallahassee reported feeling shaking, but no damage occurred as a direct cause of the tremors.

Meteorologists say Florida felt the impact of the earthquake from so far away because it was strong and shallow enough to travel hundreds of miles. It was the strongest earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico since the 1950s.

Though chances of aftershocks, which are miniature quakes following the largest shock of an earthquake, are high, they’re likely to only affect Cuba and not Florida.
