Fact brief: Is Texas Gov. Greg Abbott considering a bill banning THC products?
A bill is on Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk that will ban THC products in Texas, if he signs.
Senate Bill 3 states that a license holder may not manufacture a consumable hemp product that contains any amount of a cannabinoid.
Delta-9 THC is the most commonly known and abundant cannabinoid. The chemical is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis, giving users a “high.”
Products with Delta-9 THC are currently only legal in Texas if they contain less than 0.3% of the substance.
Delta-8 is a synthetic and less potent form of THC derived from the hemp plant. Products are sold over the counter and not regulated.
In 2019, Texas lawmakers legalized Delta-8 THC, authorizing its production, manufacture and retail sale.
Consumable hemp products containing any amount of THC, including Delta-8 and Delta-9, would be banned.
Abbott is still able to veto the bill.
