Do Providence school buses have cameras to enforce traffic safety laws?
Providence school buses are equipped with cameras to enforce traffic laws.
Drivers in Rhode Island are required to stop for school buses in operation with flashing red lights. A state law passed in 2025 ordered all school buses to be equipped with a live digital video school bus violation detection monitoring system by 2032.
The Providence Public School District fleet installed BusPatrol cameras that offer 360 degree capabilities that automatically capture violations and license plate numbers. Law enforcement officers then review the violations before sending summons to drivers.
Those caught on video illegally passing a bus are fined $250 for a first-time offense and up to $500 for subsequent offenses.
