A homeowner must obtain a permit from the city of Hollister’s Public Works Department, valid for 90 days after its issue date, before planting a tree on the planter strip near their property.
The city allows one tree per standard lot, or two trees per corner lot. A tree must be placed in the center of the planter strip, 10 feet away from utilities and driveways, and 30 feet from street corners and stop signs. In cases where there is no planter strip, the tree must be planted at least 10 feet from the curb. Trees must be chosen from the city’s approved Street Tree List.
A permit can be denied if city staff find the proposed location does not meet the spacing requirements or is unsuitable for a tree.
Trees planted in violation of the policy may be removed without compensation. Citations and additional penalties may apply.
