Has Wisconsin governor candidate David Crowley said he supports undocumented immigrants who commit violent crimes?
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, the Democratic nominee for Wisconsin governor, has not stated support for unauthorized immigrants convicted of violent crimes.
U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, the Republican candidate in the Nov. 3 election, stated that Crowley “said he will be … an accomplice for illegal aliens that commit violent crimes.”
Crowley had been asked how he would make Wisconsin “more immigrant friendly.” He said he opposes police assisting federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because it discourages unauthorized immigrants from reporting crimes, then said: “And when it comes down to the immigrants, I’m not an ally, I’m an accomplice.”
Crowley has said he would not change Milwaukee County sheriff policy of not assisting immigration officials in the jail. He has criticized ICE arrests at the county courthouse. The county has lobbied to provide state funding of immigrant legal services. He said he supports deportation for criminal convictions.
