Does a Sun Metro grant prohibit running city buses after midnight?

Sun Metro does not receive grants that prohibit buses from operating after midnight, according to an emailed statement from Claudia Garcia, the city public transportation agency’s assistant director. 

The transit system receives federal and state funding for buses, operations and infrastructure improvements, Garcia said.

Operating hours are determined based on ridership trends, available staffing, financial resources and community input.

As of May 2026, most Sun Metro routes end service before 10 p.m., according to digital route flyers. 

New schedules under Sun Metro Rising, a planned overhaul of the system effective June 2026, include later evening service on some routes. The Dyer Street corridor, for example, would operate through 10:43 p.m.

Sun Metro has previously extended operating hours for special events, running through midnight May 2-3 during BTS concerts in El Paso.
