Can people experiencing homelessness remain in public spaces in Sarasota?

Clinton Engelberger | Suncoast Searchlight, Suncoast Searchlight

no

Camping or sleeping on public property without authorization was prohibited under a 2024 Florida law.

HB 1365 states that counties and municipalities must get approval by the Department of Children and Families before designating public property to allow people to set up camp. This means homeless people can’t stay on public sidewalks or entrances unless otherwise authorized.

The city of Sarasota has a Homeless Outreach Team that engages with people experiencing homelessness in unauthorized areas, informing them of local support services available and encouraging them to seek an authorized shelter.

If the person remains in an unauthorized area after receiving support from HOT, law enforcement gets involved, which may lead to a court summons or an arrest.

Local shelters and organizations offering support to the homeless include The Salvation Army, Resurrection House, Second Heart Homes and Streets of Paradise.
