Did Germany, China and Slovenia launch ad campaigns to help feed hungry Americans?

By Sarah Thompson
NO

There was a real ad campaign launched in 2015 that depicted speakers in other countries soliciting donations for hungry children in America. But the ads did not originate from outside the U.S. The campaign, called Great Nations Eat, was launched by the Washington D.C.–based anti-hunger nonprofit Share Our Strength with the intent of encouraging Americans to donate.

The ads show people in Germany, China and Slovenia, speaking in the language of the corresponding country, with English-language subtitles appealing for help for Americans. The theme is that more Americans face a food crisis than do people in those countries.

The videos resurfaced on social media in November 2021. It's not clear if the people who reshared the videos are playing along with the unconventional approach or if they believe this campaign truly came from outside the U.S.

This fact brief is responsive to conversations such as this one.
