The transatlantic slave trade began in the 15th century when Portugal, and subsequently other European countries, began to take African people against their will to become slaves. Portugal was the world's leader in exploiting African slave labor for over a century before slavery became more ingrained in North America. The first African slaves were brought to the Americas by the Spanish in the early 16th century. Slavery itself dates back to the earliest civilizations.
