Are fake spiderweb decorations dangerous to birds and other animals? | Fact brief
Fake spiderweb decorations can entangle birds and other wildlife, sometimes causing serious injuries or death.
The Canadian Wildlife Federation says animals caught in the synthetic fibers may be unable to free themselves, leaving them vulnerable to predators, exhaustion and starvation.
WildCare, a California wildlife hospital, has treated various entangled birds. Injuries can include restricted blood flow and tissue damage, according to the National Audubon Society.
The American Bird Conservancy warns that outdoor webbing can trap unsuspecting birds, particularly during fall migration. Other entanglement hazards include fishing line, sports nets, kite strings, wind chimes and balloon ribbons.
Experts recommend only using artificial webs indoors. Outdoor displays should avoid flight paths, trees and shrubs.
The danger is documented by wildlife rehabilitators, although the overall frequency of entanglements and deaths remains unknown. Anyone finding an entangled animal should contact a licensed rehabilitator rather than try to release it.
