Does MaineCare cover chiropractic visits? | Fact brief

yes

MaineCare, Maine’s Medicaid program, covers certain chiropractic services, including spinal manipulation, examinations to diagnose spinal conditions and certain X-rays.

For adults 21 and older, coverage generally includes 12 visits per calendar year. Additional visits require prior authorization, documentation of medical necessity and a referral from a medical provider. Members younger than 21 need a referral beyond 12 visits, but not prior authorization.

MaineCare does not cover all forms of medical treatment. For example, acupuncture and massage therapy are excluded.

Related MaineCare will cover traditional Wabanaki healing practices

The federal government recently approved a plan that will allow eligible tribal health organizations to bill MaineCare for traditional Wabanaki healing services. Coverage is not yet available; Maine officials tentatively anticipate launching the benefit on Oct. 1, 2027. The state and Wabanaki Nations are still determining which healing practices will qualify, who can provide them and how the benefit will work.
