Do Canadian investors own more agricultural land in Oklahoma than Chinese investors?

Canadian investors own 1,093,171 acres of land in Oklahoma, far more than the 2,575 acres of Chinese-held land, all of which are owned by Smithfield Foods.

With over 16 million acres, Canadian investors own nearly one-third of foreign-held land nationwide – more than the next 4 largest countries of origin combined – dwarfing the 247,659 acres held by Chinese investors.

Of Oklahoma’s 44 million acres of land, more than 42 million are privately held agricultural land; 2 million acres of such land are foreign-held, or 4.8%.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Holdings of U.S. Agricultural Land Report, foreign-held agricultural land increased by 197,748 acres in Oklahoma between 2023 and 2024 – the third largest annual increase after New Mexico and Texas.

HB 3431, signed into law May 2026, bans foreign governments and specifically designated nationals from owning or leasing land and critical minerals in Oklahoma.
