Can you sleep overnight at the Portland International Jetport? | Fact brief

Travelers cannot sleep overnight in the Portland International Jetport’s concourse, the secured area beyond the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint.

The jetport’s terminal building is open 24 hours a day, but TSA screening, airline counters and concessions close after the final flight boards and generally reopen 90 minutes before the next morning’s scheduled departures.

Sleeping in Airports, an independent travel website, says passengers are restricted to the public portion of the terminal after security closes; they must pass through screening again when the checkpoint reopens.

The jetport has no designated sleeping areas, rest zones or cots, but Sleeping in Airports notes that there are benches near baggage claim and a quieter area near the airport management office. If you prefer a bed, the Hilton Garden Inn Portland Airport and Embassy Suites by Hilton Portland Maine are both within walking distance.

A jetport spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
