Can you make a plastic/polymer gun with a 3D printer?

It is possible to make a weapon with a 3D printer. However, fully 3D-printed firearms are the least reliable and durable.

Tests in 2023 of the six most popular 3D firearms show all became inoperative after one discharge and could not be used for further discharges unless the broken pieces were replaced.

Success or failure for even one discharge depends on polymer composites used, welds, builder experience and type of weapon produced.

These untraceable “ghost guns” are illegal in Washington state under HB 2320, signed into law in March 2026. California has the most effective gun laws in the U.S., Idaho has the least effective. Washington ranks 9th.

Luigi Mangione is accused of using a ghost gun to kill United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson in 2024. Thompson was killed with a single shot. Surveillance video shows the gun then jammed.
