Fact Brief: Is San Jose home to the largest Sikh temple in North America?
Sitting on 40 acres in San Jose’s Evergreen hills, the Sikh Gurdwara Sahib, also known as the Sikh Gurdwara San Jose, is the largest Sikh place of worship in North America.
The Sikh Gurdwara San Jose became the largest gurdwara in North America — and anywhere outside of India — in 2011, when the temple concluded a $20 million expansion. The vast campus includes a 37,000-square-foot prayer hall, 35,000 square feet of kitchen and dining space, 12 classrooms for religious education and 11 apartments for temple priests and visitors.
The Sikh Gurdwara San Jose was founded in 1984. The temple attracts visitors from across the Bay Area — and throughout the country — and reports an average weekly attendance of more than 10,000 people.
