Is spring the most common season for tornadoes in Tarrant County?

Most tornadoes in Tarrant County happen during the spring.

The leading month of tornadoes is April followed by May and March, a three-month time period considered tornado season in Texas.

Another pattern tracked by the National Weather Service in Fort Worth is the time of day when tornadoes occur in Tarrant County. Data shows that the majority of tornadoes take place between 3 and 8 p.m.

From 1880 through the end of January 2024, 110 tornadoes were recorded in Tarrant County, with 33 occurring in April and 21 in May.

Tornado strength is measured on an F-scale rating from EF0 to EF5. Weak tornadoes are EF0 to EF1, strong tornadoes are EF2 to EF3 and violent tornadoes are EF4 to EF5.

Around 45% of all tornadoes in Tarrant County were categorized as EF0, and around 33% were categorized as EF1.
