Is Oklahoma among the top states for wind power production?
Oklahoma generated 37,731 GWh of energy from wind in 2023, making it the No.3 state in this regard.
Texas generated the most energy from wind by far, producing 119,836 GWh; that’s more energy than the next three states — Iowa, Oklahoma, and Kansas — combined.
These four states also ranked in the top four for wind capacity growth and wind generation growth during the decade from 2014 to 2023. With a 224% increase in wind capacity and 216% increase in wind energy generation, Oklahoma ranked No. 2 and No.1 in these categories, respectively.
Oklahoma alone produced 9% of the nation’s wind energy in 2023, and the top 5 states in wind energy generation produced 59%.
Wind energy accounts for 42% of Oklahoma’s total in-state electricity net generation. Natural gas accounts for another 50%, coal accounts for 6%, and other renewable sources account for the rest.
