Is more than 20% of Oklahoma’s state revenue from the federal government?

According to an analysis of the latest U.S. Census data, Oklahoma’s state government received 43% of its 2022 revenue from federal grants. The state ranked 13th overall in the highest percentage of state revenue coming from the federal government.

Federal grants totaling $14.5 billion funded a range of services administered by Oklahoma state government, such as health care, education, and infrastructure. That was Oklahoma’s largest revenue source in 2022, with state taxes providing the second largest share at 39%.

The proportion of federal funds in state revenues has increased since the early 1980s, with the recent spike owing to COVID-19 pandemic aid. State governments overall received 61% more in federal grants in 2022 than before the pandemic; Oklahoma’s federal funding doubled from 2019 to 2022.
