Is Maricopa County required to remove malfunctioning election equipment on Election Day?

By Jordan Gerard
NO

Malfunctioning equipment is only removed at the discretion of election officers. According to the written contingency plan for the 2022 elections, if a voting location’s supplies or equipment is inoperable, poll workers and observers are to use hotlines to advise the Elections Department. If necessary, replacement supplies and equipment will be dispatched from one of 10 supply depot locations in Maricopa County.

The contingency plan provides guidance for long-term, widespread power outages or cellular network failures. No voting centers were closed in Maricopa County as a result of the printer malfunction on Election Day.
