Fact Brief: Is the commissary at Moffett Field going to close?

no

The Moffett Federal Airfield Commissary in Mountain View was at risk of shutting down in 2026, but will remain open for at least another two years.

The Defense Commissary Agency and NASA Ames, which owns the property, reached an agreement to continue the store’s operations through 2028, with the option for an extension through 2029. The deal comes after outcry from community members and elected officials, including Congressman Sam Liccardo, who urged against the imminent closure of the affordable grocer for military families.

The Mountain View commissary serves approximately 8,000 households as the only location in Silicon Valley. The closest alternatives are more than an hour away in Fairfield and Monterey. The low-cost marketplace saves military families at least 25% on food and household items, according to the U.S. Army’s benefits website.
