Does Las Vegas get 90% of its gas from a California pipeline?
Kinder Morgan’s 566-mile CALNEV pipeline provides 90% of the fuel consumed in the Las Vegas area.
The CALNEV system transports gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from Los Angeles-area refineries and marine terminals using parallel 14-inch and 8-inch diameter pipes. The pipeline originates in Colton, California, and extends to multiple terminals, including Las Vegas, where it also serves Nellis Air Force Base and Harry Reid International Airport.
In February, the pipeline shut down for two days due to a leak at a pipeline station in Long Beach, California. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo made an emergency declaration enabling fuel transport by other means. The Las Vegas area also receives fuel from the UNEV pipeline operated by Holly Energy. It originates in Utah and can move 60,000 barrels of fuel per day.
