Do voters in states that have not expanded Medicaid largely support expansion?

By Maxwell Craig
YES

Among those who live in states that have not expanded Medicaid, 61% support expansion while 29% want the program to remain as is, according to a poll conducted in February by KFF, a nonprofit focusing on health policy and analysis. Those views were endorsed in referendums in Oklahoma in June and Missouri on Aug. 4 supporting expansion in those states. Twelve states continue to opt out of broader Medicaid coverage.

Expanding eligibility for Medicaid, which provides health-insurance for lower-income people, was one the 2010 Affordable Care Act's measures to expand health insurance coverage. In 2012, the Supreme Court blocked the law's Medicaid mandate, leaving the decision to participate up to each state.

ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Between 2020 and 2022, under close editorial supervision, Gigafact contracted a group of freelance writers and editors to test the concepts for fact briefs and provide inputs to our software development process. We call this effort Gigafact Foundry. Over the course of these two years, Gigafact Foundry writers published over 1500 fact briefs in response to claims they found online. Their important work forms the basis of Gigafact formats and editorial guidelines, and is available to the public on Gigafact.org. Readers should be aware that while there is still a lot of relevant information to be found, not all fact briefs produced by Gigafact Foundry reflect Gigafact's current methods and standards for fact briefs.
