Did the number of homeless people in Oklahoma City increase by 28% in 2024?

The most recent annual Point in Time count of homeless people, conducted on January 25, 2024, counted 1,838 people in Oklahoma City – up 28% from the 1,436 counted in 2023. 

According to the Point in Time report, this is part of an overall upward trend from 1,273 homeless people in 2019. The overall population in Oklahoma City has also increased from 655,057 in 2019 to 702,767 in July 2023. 

The count used the Homeless Management Information System to collect information from organizations with data regarding people in their programs, as well as field surveys conducted by volunteers at emergency shelters, traditional housing, meal sites, day shelters, and the street. 

Seven percent of those counted were veterans. 

Tulsa, which has an estimated population of 411,894 as of 2023, saw a similar increase of 22%, with a count of 1,389 people.
