Did superintendents in Oklahoma put pornographic books in kindergarten classrooms?
The books in question are not pornography, and there is no evidence they were made available to kindergarteners.
Spokespersons from multiple school districts confirmed that neither “Gender Queer” nor “Flamer” was ever available in their elementary schools.
The books are coming-of-age graphic novels that explore themes of self-acceptance and coming out with regard to gender identity and sexual orientation. They include drawings of masturbation and gay sex, according to The Associated Press.
Both were found in some Tulsa secondary school libraries and removed due to concerns over inappropriate images.
Oklahoma law defines pornography as obscene material lacking literary, artistic, educational, political, or scientific purposes or value. It must also have as its dominant theme an appeal to prurient interest and sex and be patently offensive.
