Did Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo say he would support an ‘abortion sanctuary’ state law?

By Todd Butterworth
YES

Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo recently said he "could support" a proposed law protecting women who come to Nevada for an abortion from other states where abortion is illegal.

If adopted, SB131 would prohibit the governor from surrendering a person charged in another state with a crime involving an abortion unless it would also be a crime in Nevada. The bill generally prohibits state agencies from helping other states in such circumstances and excludes cases in which the person was physically present in the other state when committing the alleged offense.

As of January 2023, 12 states restrict abortion at conception. In Nevada, abortion within 24 weeks of pregnancy was made legal by referendum and cannot be overturned by the Legislature.

Nevada’s previous governor, Steve Sisolak, signed an executive order that remains effective and contains provisions similar to SB131.
