There are no union contracts covering in-store grocery workers in Maine. However, some grocery distribution and warehouse workers in the state are covered by union contracts.

At the Shaw’s distribution center in Wells, warehouse and logistics workers are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers. That union covers grocery stores across New England but does not represent any in-store employees in Maine.

Some grocery delivery drivers in Maine also have union representation, including those represented by Teamsters Local 340, based in South Portland.

Hannaford owner Ahold Delhaize operates unionized grocery stores under some of its other U.S. brands, including Stop & Shop and Giant. But in Maine, union representation is currently limited to workers in distribution operations and does not include in-store employees.

Unionization of grocery workers is determined by workplace elections under federal labor law.
