Are short-term property rentals in Arlington allowed outside of permitted zones?

By Ryan Thorpe
NO

Short-term property rentals in Arlington are restricted to certain zones.

In April 2019, the Arlington City Council allowed short-term property rentals with conditions. Ordinance No. 19-104 outlined location permissions, while ordinance No. 19-022 set boundaries for holding short-term rentals.

The Arlington City Council banned short-term rentals outside of permitted zones, which are mostly near the entertainment district. City officials said that short-term rentals can bring parties, trash and violence to neighborhoods.

When residents challenged the initial ban on short-term rentals in court, a Fort Worth appeals court ruled enforcement of the ordinance could continue.

A short-term rental is considered any part of a residential property that is used to lodge occupants for less than 30 consecutive days. Typically, these are found on sites like Airbnb.

Permits for rentals in the entertainment district cost $500 and require host rules for guests,  square footage showing room locations, and proof of insurance coverage.
