Fact brief: Can Veasey run for reelection under Texas’ proposed new redistricting map?
U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth, can run for reelection under a proposed redistricting of Texas’ 33rd Congressional District.
To run for the U.S. House, the Constitution requires candidates to be citizens for at least seven years and residents of their state.
The Constitution does not stipulate that such candidates must live in the district they seek to represent.
States can establish district residency requirements for state and local offices, such as state lawmakers or judges.
Requiring U.S. House members to be residents of the districts they represent would require a constitutional amendment.
The Texas Legislature is considering a mid-decade redrawing of congressional districts. A new redistricting map proposes moving Veasey’s district — which includes parts of Fort Worth, Arlington, Grand Prairie and other cities — east where it would be completely enveloped by Dallas County.
Veasey lives in Fort Worth where he was born and raised.
