Were diesel-powered generators spotted powering COP26?
Widely shared tweets with photos attached have spread a baseless assertion that the U.N. climate conference in Scotland, known as COP26, is using diesel-fueled generators.
COP26, however, said its generators do not use diesel. And the press office for Aggreko, the manufacturer of the equipment seen in photos, said the images actually show electric air handlers, chillers, and heaters. The office said Aggreko did provide the conference with generators that are powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil.
In a response to a tweet questioning whether the generators were diesel, the COP26 Twitter account wrote: “No - they are fueled by hydrogenated vegetable oil, which has 90% less carbon emissions than diesel. These will kick in should we need additional power. For info, all our electricity on site at COP26 is supplied by renewables.”
