Has Tony Evers and his supporters spent twice as much on the election as Tim Michels and his supporters?
In terms of television ad spending since the August gubernatorial primary, the $38 million spent by Nevada Gov. Tony Evers, the Democratic incumbent, and his supporters was more than double the $17 million spent by his Republican challenger Tim Michels and his supporters, according to the analytics company AdImpact. These figures indicate the race is the most expensive gubernatorial contest in the general election in 2022, AdImpact said.
Counting just spending by the campaigns, finance reporting through Aug. 31 shows Evers' campaign has spent $20 million compared to Michels' $15 million. Those figures include spending since Jan. 1, 2022; Michels announced his candidacy on April 22, while Evers announced in 2021.
Given that Michels only won the Republican primary in August, experts say Evers has had more time as incumbent to fundraise for the race.
