Does Joe Lombardo want to 'remove any rights for Nevadans to make their own medical decisions' about abortion?
While Republican Nevada gubernatorial candidate Joe Lombardo has said he would view abortion issues through a pro-life lens, he does not want to strip Nevadans of all their abortion rights.
In a note published on his website on Sept. 27, 2022, Lombardo clarified that he opposes a full abortion ban and supports access to abortions in cases of rape, incest and endangerment to the mother's life. He also said he supports contraceptive access and would no longer repeal Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak's executive order that declared Nevada will not assist other states in prosecuting residents traveling to Nevada for abortions.
In a recent debate with Sisolak, Lombardo confirmed that he supports notifying parents about abortion procedures for minors (with exceptions for rape and incest) and changing mandatory waiting periods and opposes mandating ultrasounds before abortion.
In Nevada, abortion access through 24 weeks became law after the passage of an early 1990s ballot question. This can only be changed through a vote of the people.
