Does Mandela Barnes support raising taxes on the middle class?

By Jacob Alabab-Moser
NO

Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, the Democratic candidate for Wisconsin for the U.S. Senate, advocates lowering middle class taxes, not raising them.

On his website, Barnes lists "middle class tax cut" as one of his policy priorities. Barnes has said that, as a senator, he would support giving the middle class a tax cut through an expansion of the Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax cuts.

He said in a June 2022 press release that he would fund such cuts by ensuring that "the wealthy corporations and special interest groups finally start to pay their fair share."

Barnes has outlined other proposals that he says would ease living costs for the middle class. These include raising the hourly minimum wage to $15 with inflation indexing and lowering costs for health care, education, prescription drugs and child care.
