The coronavirus shutdown had a big impact on the health care sector, especially on providers of dentistry and other outpatient services. Official statistics put the job loss in April at 1.2 million, as patients deferred visits to physicians, dentists and other practitioners. About a third of those losses were offset by gains in May, although hospital, nursing and residential-care jobs continued to fall.
Just in California, the state hospital association has stated that hospitals are now $10 billion to $15 billion in debt, with losses of $2 billion to $3 billion each month of the pandemic.
